What is an “mkv” file, and how do i play it?

A “.mkv” is a video file, which can be played with Media Player Classic* or VLC among others. The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free Container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture or subtitle tracks inside a single file.
