A “.mkv” is a video file, which can be played with Media Player Classic* or VLC among others. The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free Container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture or subtitle tracks inside a single file.

For more info on splitting, converting, merging and playing mkvs, see this forum post..

*Media Player Classic comes with all the codecs you’ll need in K-Lite Codec Pack: Full Version.
