I have created posts for all those definitions, and will build on them over time.

All the new posts are available on this page.

Is “reloaded” synonymous with “repack”?

No, RELOADED (rld) is a release group. See the List of Scene Release Groups.

For example, “Assassins.Creed.REPACK-RELOADED” is a REPACK by RELOADED.

What does “DSR” mean?

DSR – Digital Stream Rip (used to be digital satellite rip) Now refers to ALL 480i digital stream captures (no analog)) Can be Fullscreen OR Widscreen, where widescreen will usually be labeled WS.DSR

I’ve noticed the FESTIVAL tag popping up recently. I’m assuming it’s regarding the source, but do they mean the normal quality copy that’s being projected, or the low quality (but typically on a dvd already) copy that the translator/subbers work with?

I would have thought that “DVD” or “CD” would be used if it was off a disk. I am not completely sure, but i’d say FESTIVAL meant recorded at the actual festival if i had to guess.

What context is it used in?

Movie releases, basically. I just remembered that it doesn’t replace the DVDRip tag in all these examples, so it’s probably not indicating the source format. My next best bet would be that it’s akin to the LIMITED tag, just providing some information/explanation about how widely distributed it is. Hm, some movies premier at a festival, so getting a copy then would be really beating the release in most countries. Others I’ve seen have a lot of success in their home country, and thus end up at other international film festivals. *shrugs* Just thinking it’s hard to conclude exactly what your average FESTIVAL tag would be telling you.

Examples:
http://www.rlslog.net/the-escapist-festival-dvdrip-xvid-coalition/
http://www.rlslog.net/killer-movie-2008-real-festival-dvdrip-xvid-intimid/
http://www.rlslog.net/redemption-2007-festival-dvdrip-xvid-intimid/
http://www.rlslog.net/the-crew-2008-festival-dvdrip-xvid-nodlabs/

Best of luck puzzling this out!

I’m afraid i can’t help. I’ll make a new post for it, and see if anyone stumbles onto it!

What does “Festival” mean?

what does the FESTiVAL tag mean?

Read the comment above… post there if you’ve got any other questions relating to the FESTIVAL tag.. Cheers :)

TVRip: Recorded from analog TV, lowest quality of all TV rips

DSRip: Recorded from Digital Satellite, good quality rip

PDTV: Recorded from Pure Digital Source, but not HDTV. The quality is similar to a DSRip

HDTV: Recorded from a HDTV source. High video and sound quality. The video resolution is often 624×352, and the audio stream 128kb/s MP3

HR.HDTV: Best Quality There is. Recorded from a HDTV source. The video resolution is often around 960×540 which is half the size of the original HDTV broadcast. A 45 minute show is often 700MB instead of 350MB like the other releases.

What does PPV mean?

What does “CDM” mean ?

I’m pretty sure this is a release group, rather than a definition. I couldn’t say whether they were scene or not.

In all the examples I can find of it, it occurs at the end of the release name, such as “Mariah_Carey-I_Want_to_Know_What_Love_is_Remixes-2009-CDM”.

If you can find some examples where it does not come at the end of the release name, reply and let us know!

FRENCH.LD
What does LD stand for? Does it mean it is dubbed? If so, Why not FRENCH.DUBBED or just FRENCH. As this common in german rels like GERMAN.DUBBED.

I dont think LD has anything to do w/ sub or dub.
look at the filename below
Mamma.Mia.2008.German.Dubbed.LD.DVDRiP.XViD-BaRaCK-OBaMa.part1.rar

there is “Dubbed” but there also “LD”. so they have to indicate sth different

What does mean: “reenc.x264”?
Thank you

Reencoded using x264

What does it mean when someone says that they’re scene?

It means they either dress like this =

..or, they should learn to be quiet.

What Is the “MD” after BDRip (sounds like amicrophone dub?!)

thanks

Capping

That was captured from some place (for ex, an HDTV release).

what does R2 mean ?

R2 means Region 2 (Europe) refers to dvd region’s

CDM: rip of a music disc that contains two or more different songs. Normally, they come along with their instrumentals and/or acapellas.

Is this blog still active? Do you want to have an extra maintainer?

eBDRIP – Enhanced Bluray Disk Rip means the release where encoder intentionally enhance the quality of the source to have perceptable quality better than Bluray itself.

Hi everyone
I can’t find infos for the -P2P tag (at the end of a release name)
Is this a team ? or it means that is a PeerToPeer release or unofficial repack ?
thx

Yeah, it means that someone on PeerToPeer network releases it.

Difference between BDRip and BRRip. A lot of people still seem to be confused about it.

BDRip = (Blu-ray Disc Rip) a Rip made directly from a Blu-ray.

BRRip = (BluRay Rip) is a rip made from an already encoded BluRay.

What does “Untouched” mean?

Hi
Untouched meens that the program is not unofficially modified, it’s the original ISO provided by editor, the original one

For exemple Windows XP downloaded directly from MSDN (untouched, official), and an unattended version like “Windows LSD”, or with included updates like “Windows XP Incl Sept 2011 Updates”, all that unofficial modified stuff =)

What does “ViDEO: CCE” mean, I meant what does “CCE” mean for video?

Cinema Craft Encoder
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_Craft_Encoder

From the DVDR scene rules: http://scenerules.irc.gs/t.html?id=2011_DVDR.nfo
3.1.1 CCE version 2.67+ or higher MUST be used in all circumstances
where re-encoding of the video stream is required.

Hi, I would like to know what “pl” means, for example:
Leon.The.Professional.1994.PL.1080p.BluRay.x264-AiHD

Thanks

PL is a language tag. It means that the release has Polish audio. In your example the movie is dubbed in Polish.

It is also used for actual Polish movies that have no English subtitles available with the release. An example:
http://www.srrdb.com/showfile.php?release=Enen.2009.PL.720p.HDTV.x264-JBS&file=jbs-enen-hdtv.nfo

Most other language tags are more self explaining: FLEMiSH, DUTCH, German, FRENCH, SWEDiSH, FiNNiSH, DANiSH, NORWEGiAN, Hungarian (It seems this is the last Hungarian (video) scene release: Game.of.Thrones.S01E10.HDTV.XviD.Hungarian.FAREWELL-TvTiME), iTALiAN, Greek, TURKiSH, SPANiSH, CHINESE, JAPANESE, LiTHUANiAN, ESTONiAN, POLiSH…

NL.SUBBED: with hardcoded Dutch subtitles; NL is not used for video outside this context, however it is common for music
RU: Russian
LT: Lithuanian
EE: Estonian
HU: Hungarian (for music)
CZ: Czech
SK: Slovak
CN: Chinese
JAP: Japanese
BALTiC: this is used with some DVDRs

These are all language tags I know of in use by the scene. If a foreign release has English subtitles available, it doesn’t get tagged with a language tag. Some languages have a long and a short version. This seems to depend on the scene (e.g. movie, mp3 or game scene) or the release group in question.

what does “pl” or “plsubbed” mean?

See my comment above. PLSUBBED means the the video has hard coded Polish subtitles in it. (you can’t turn those off)

LOL, FQM, 2HD,… Can someone explain more? All I know is that they are groups that distribute their own releases but where do they have their own webpages if any? Where do they initially distribute their releases?

Those groups pre on topsites and they will distribute their releases: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topsite_(warez)
These are scene groups: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez_(scene)
They follow a shared set of rules: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_(warez)

What does “RC” mean, e.g. “P2P group FANTA released the RC BRRip of ….”

The RC often stands for “release candidate”, but not in this case.
“Blu-ray Discs use a much simpler region-code system than DVD with only 3 regions, labeled A, B, and C.

– Region A includes most North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus the Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.

– Region B includes most European, African and southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand.

– Region C contains the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as the People’s Republic of China and Russia.”
Source: http://www.rlslog.net/limitless-2011-rc-bluray-720p-tdp/#comment-2683270

It means “Region C” and I guess it’s comparable to an R5. https://scenelingo.wordpress.com/2008/07/29/what-does-r5-mean/

What’s the proper way to label a Director’s Cut release?
Which one is it?:
1.) DC
2.) DirCut
3.) Directors.Cut
4.) Dir.Cut
Personally, I think it’s 1.) DC. But I’m not sure considering I’ve seen them all used before…!?

Also, should it go BEFORE or AFTER the release name’s year? Where’s the proper place to put “DC”?
(e.g. Dragon.Eyes.DC.2012.720p.BluRay.x264-GRP
-OR-
Dragon.Eyes.2012.DC.720p.BluRay.x264-GRP)

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Xvid standards use DC.
Nothing is said about it in the x264 standards.
Both uses for the location are common as far as I can see from the predbs: https://pre.corrupt-net.org/?qid=5P3

What does “CONVERT” mean?

Example release with the tag:

National.Geographic.Super.Weed.CONVERT.HDTV.x264-TASTETV

What does “dirfix” mean?

Anyone knows what NATiVE, OAR, CONVERT and REAL are? Just saw it here: http://scenerules.irc.gs/t.html?id=2012_SDTVx264r.nfo

OAR: original aspect ratio. The definition according that ruleset: OAR = (SourceWidth-CropLeft-CropRight)/(SourceHeight-CropTop-CropBottom)
It’s the aspect ratio of the video when the black bars are removed.
“Encoded Video resolution must be within 2% of the original aspect ratio.” This is to prevent seeing too wide or too small faces.

REAL: This tag is used when a previous release of an episode was fake. E.g. the release name says it’s s01e07, but actually it was s01e06. So the real episode 7 gets tagged REAL to avoid some confusion.

CONVERT: https://scenelingo.wordpress.com/2012/06/09/what-does-convert-mean/

NATIVE: ( CONVERT) it’s explained in the ruleset itself:
“Native” refers to the standard in which the video was produced (e.g. NTSC or PAL). NTSC produced video is native to NTSC, PAL produced video is native to PAL. PAL produced video that is broadcast in NTSC is converted. NTSC produced video that is broadcast in PAL is converted.”
The tag is mainly used when a previous release was tagged CONVERT.
“Native releases are allowed after those tagged CONVERT. Use NATIVE tag.”
Because the ruleset is pretty new, I haven’t seen a release tagged native yet.

What does the LT tag mean? ex: Chloe.2009.LT.720p.BluRay.x264-PPi

I think it has to do with the language?

http://www.prelist.ws/?search=.LT.720p

what does the terms: “intact untouched” mean?

Intact describes something that is complete and that has not been damaged in any way.
Untouched: Not harmed: intact, whole, secure, unbroken, in good order, unharmed, unscathed, in good condition, in a good state of preservation, safe and sound, out of danger, shipshape

The words are often used in the context of DVDs.

What is AHDTV? MOMENTUM has been tagging their releases with it instead of HDTV.

http://www.prelist.ws/?search=ahdtv

Here you find the AHDTV explanation. I already started a draft for this one before you suggested it :)

Ah great, thanks for your help! Good timing then, haha.

This isn’t really a definition suggestion, but I was wondering if you’d like to do a link exchange with http://sceneinformation.com/ my website.

The site isn’t done (I’m working on pages/downloads relating to keygen music, welcome to the scene and its parodies, and a huge list of scene, p2p, and individual releases along with sample NFO files for each group. Basically I did the easy stuff first (and don’t worry, no terms on my terms page were copied from here. I’ve got plenty that aren’t listed here to my knowledge and I’ve still got more to add.)

I can be reached via sceneinfosite@gmail.com

What does “Bootleg” mean in the scene

Here’s a question, more of wanting an explanation than a definition. The other day IMMERSE pre’d Made.in.Jersey.S01E01.720p.HDTV.x264-IMMERSE. It was then nuked for “possible.analog.source.request.source.proof”. How can they tell? And more importantly, why doesn’t the scene allow analogue sources for television? And the final thing, since many countries are switching from analogue television to digital and giving out those set top boxes where the cable jack in the wall goes to the box and then out the other end into the TV to convert the signal – does that count as an analogue signal still or since it’s converted, it is considered an okay source or no?

Thanks. :)

They can tell by examining the source sample video file frame by frame. True digital HDTV 1080i and 720p recordings are either interlaced frames that run at 29.97 frames per second or progressive frames running 59.94 fps. Analogue recordings show very different results; typically 1080p which doesn’t happen with digital HDTV or 720p that is only 29.97 fps.
.
Scene does allow for analogue HDTV now and these are recordings from capture cards versus digital recordings from a tuner card or firewire from the HD set top box to PC installed with a transport stream recording tool.
.
If the box between the wall outlet and the TV is not a HD box then it’s a digital converter. These convert the digital signal to an analogue signal for coaxial or composite cable connection to the TV set. Recordings from a digital converter box are “TVRip”s and by definition on this site TVRip is the lowest quality of video.

Adding on to my earlier post – yet the scene has AHDTV, aka analogue hd television. Any elaboration on my question and why AHDTV exists (added this year, I think. I remember your post on it) even with the no analogue source will be helpful. Thanks.

That bar of strict TV scene high standards dropped a little.
And a little more with the addition of the CONVERT tag.
.
“NTSC produced video is native to NTSC, PAL produced video is native to PAL. PAL produced video that is broadcast in NTSC is converted. NTSC produced video that is broadcast in PAL is converted.” …And goes on about blended frames and artifacts and blablabla.
.
These blended frames and artifacts can most often be cleaned up well enough and un-converted, so to say, back to their native video. That is if the person doing the encoding knows how to. Next time you check out a video with the CONVERT tag on it try watching frame by frame in a few spots. I am willing to bet there’s a repeating pattern of 3 or 4 ‘clean’ frames followed by 2 ‘blended’ frames. The 3 clean 2 blended or 4 clean 2 blended frame patterns can be cleaned up no problem. However, it’s even easier for the unknowledgeable to slap a lazy CONVERT tag on it to avoid a nuke. I thought understanding 3:2 pulldown and inverse telecine was a prerequisite to scene?
.
This is just my observation, and I’m not totally bashing on scene as they’ve been there for many years bringing ample amounts of entertainment and information for us, but it almost appears as if the scene of scene has shifted and the wise old dogs are taking a nap on the porch while the new pups run around in the house.
.
My apologies for all that dribble. lol ;D

What does SBD mean? I’ve often seen it between SAT releases.

SBD is Soundboard meaning it came directly from the recording room.

what means UNRATED exactly? I see on several bluray rips:

The.Last.Exorcism.Part.II.2013.UNRATED.720p.Bluray.x264-BLOW

This.is.40.2012.UNRATED.1080p.BluRay.x264-ALLiANCE

Identity.Thief.2013.UNRATED.BDRip.XviD-SPARKS

Thanks in advance

UNRATED means the release is unrated not the theatrical version that was released in the theatres, usually contain scenes that you didnt get to see on the silver screen,

OK I’ll auto answer myself cause I found the answer so if anyone is interested here is the explaination:

“Unrated means the movie has not been rated by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Most older unrated movies are just not rated by the MPAA because they are generally PG in content, however newer films are unrated because of excessive gore or violence which would have to be cut in order to obtain a rating.”

Cheers nice site.

What does iLS mean?

What is a HDRip? I’ve seen some tagged as HDRip and saying the source if from web-dl, but I do not know if that is always the case.

Found a counter example from 2006:
http://www.srrdb.com/release/details/Who.Am.I.1998.HDRip.x264.AC3-CNXP
– Source ………. HDTV

What is CRF tag for?
Aliens.1986.Directors.Cut.iNTERNAL.CRF.1080p.BluRay.x264-MOOVEE
Aliens.1986.Directors.Cut.iNTERNAL.CRF.720p.BluRay.x264-MOOVEE

CRF stands for Constant Rate Factor. It is a single pass encoding method used instead of a 2 pass encoding.
http://slhck.info/crf.html

what is “DupeNET”?

DupeNET is the name of a nuke network. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuke_(warez)#Pre_network for an explanation.

The network has been mentioned in a Scene notice: http://scenenotice.org/details.php?id=651
I don’t think it still exists.

Here you can find a list of networks: https://pre.im/database.txt

DupeNET does not exist anymore AFAIK. If you look at https://pre.corrupt-net.org/?qid=M3F there’s no history for it since corrupt-net started collecting nukes/delpres/pres a year or two ago.

That list of networks you gave is missing a few too since obvious things come and go. Some are more P2P-ish and some not too widespread in the scene with the exception of EthNet since it began earlier this year, but there’s also nukenets like Micro-NET, CNET (aka corrupt-net which is p2p but many public pre database websites and torrent sites echo/store their nukes), scifiNET, CleaNeX, and EthNet as I mentioned.

Oh and I forgot one, THE-CLiT. But there’s only one nuke since September 2, 2013. So I hardly consider it to be a net.

what does ‘quality dubbed copies’ means?

MULTi

What is a “Complete Blu-ray”?

All extras, commentary, deleted scenes, etc. are still available on the bluray disc iso.
Only the copyright protection is stripped and the complete bluray releases are made region free.

What does “remux” mean?

What does MW mean?
I have some videos downloaded recently that contain “HDTV.MW.XviD”.

MW is a P2P releaser tagging their stuff oddly. Instead of HDTV.XViD-MW they do HDTV.MW.XViD.

web-dl

WEB-DL means that it’s a video that’s been downloaded directly from a website like Netflix. These usually have better quality than WebRips.

Cap – Capper

Is there possible to made list arrested or retired release groups?

What does “cinavia” mean?

Thanks! And love the site btw :)

Cinavia, originally called Verance Copy Management System for Audiovisual Content (VCMS/AV),[3] is an analog watermarking and steganography system under development by Verance since 1999, and released in 2010. In conjunction with the existing Advanced Access Content System (AACS) digital rights management (DRM) inclusion of Cinavia watermarking detection support became mandatory for all consumer Blu-ray Disc players from 2012.

What is “Hybrid”?

On video, Hybrid is used when there been used more than one source to build a release. For ex, video from one source, audio and subtitles from another source.

What does MULTI mean?

Means that the file have multiple languages.

What does “QC” means?

For ex: Mollys.Game.2017.COMPLETE.QC.BLURAY-4FR

Thank you!

Well, I realized that it’s probably means “Quebec”, I mean, the french language used on Quebec.

What is OAR? As in “A.Simple.Favor.2018.OAR.1080p.BluRay.H264.AAC-RARBG”

(cinematography) The aspect ratio of the rectangular shape that the director intended his or her motion picture to be viewed in, as opposed to modified aspect ratio.
