What does “HDR” mean?

HDR stands for ‘High Dynamic Range’. The term originates in photography where it refers to a technique to heighten a picture’s dynamic range: the display contrast levels between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks, essentially increasing the depth of the color produced in the image. The theory is the higher the dynamic range, the closer a photograph gets to all the different tones you would see in real life.

There are different implementations of HDR for video: HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision and Advanced HDR by Technicolor. HDR10 is the original and still the most common form of HDR. It’s an open standard that has been adopted by numerous manufacturers, streaming services (Amazon, Netflix, Apple and Disney+) and the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). It is the more generic as its parameters, for example the average brightness range, are determined and applied across an entire film.

Dolby Vision is more precise than HDR10 because its HDR parameters can be encoded scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame and it can be played based on the capabilities of the TV. Samsung developed its own standard of dynamic HDR: HDR10+, and unlike Dolby Vision, it is an open, royalty-free platform.

HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) is potentially the most important HDR format of all, because it is the one used by TV broadcasters. It was developed by Japan’s NHK and the BBC Broadcasting Systems but is license-free. It takes standard dynamic range and high dynamic range images and combines them into one feed.

This UHD also has has dynamic HDR10 (HDR10+). From what we read, the HDR10+ data will likely need to be adjusted if crop is applied, and it’s not something we know how to do yet. Therefore we left it uncropped (it doesn’t really matter anyway).

The HDR10Plus tag can be seen for the first time on an UHD internal Blu-Ray rip of the movie “Windows” from IAMABLE, released in April 2019. The HDR10 scene tag appeared first on a German webrip from CODY in November 2020 and in that same month the DV tag was used for the first time on a Blu-Ray release with Dolby Vision although it was in use before on WEB releases already. The HLG tag got introduced on a 2160p WEB release of 4KTv in December 2020. All these scene releases had a 2160p resolution.
